Want to learn about the Yanomamos? Then click on the link below to a website that is easy to read and pretty to look at. The Yanomamos live in huts called shabonos in Central Brazil. They live in constant warfare with other tribes, beat their wives when ever they feel the need, and believe in polygamy to keep the tribe growing. They have a complex 4 layer religious belief- they use hallucenogenic drugs and stories to practice it. This site was short- but to the point. I have never heard of the Yanomamos, so chose this topic to learn about something new.
Yanomamos
The second site I chose had even more information and some great pictures. It is hard for me to imagine that such a primitive people still exists today. The link to Yanomamo shaman is of particular interest to me. It tells of how shaman begin their training and fast for a long time- sometimes over a year. It also tells the duties of a shaman, and again, has some great pictures. The shaman ingest ebene, a hallucinogen, to be able to use "hekuras,:" or spirits to aid them in healing. Click on the link labeled Hekuras to learn more about these ancient spirits.
The Yanomamo Shaman
This last site also has some great pictures. The part of this site that I found great to read was the agriculture section. They mimic natural conditions to keep the soil productive- if they didnt do this, the soil dries up quickly and becomes unusable. Their main staple is plantains, though they do rely on gathering at times as well as hunting.
Because the food supply is running low, sometimes entire villages up and move for weeks on large hunting excursions called , "treks."
This site shows the true resourcefulness of the Yanomamo.
