A Declaration from King Itzcoatl

Our human sacrifices to the god of supreme war, Huitzilopochtli, have been rewarded.  The alliance of Tenochitlan, Texcoco and Tlaccopan has paid off.  Together, we have conquered the Tepanecs. We are powerful and mighty now. We must let our descendants know how great we are, of our conquests. Huitzilopochtli told our ancestors to settle in a spot where they found an eagle holding a snake perching on a stone.  This cannot be forgotten- the sacrifices keep our warriors ready for battle.
The lies and falsehoods of our history must be abonished!  The old history books show us as barbarians! Or, they don't recognize us at all!   I hereby declare that all books and records be burnt and history must be rewritten!
The new history will tell how the Aztecs descended from the Toltecs, those who sit beside the gods.  Quetzalcoatl, the Toltec god, will sit by Huizilopochtli.
My nephew, Tlacaelel, is second in command.  He is a skillful leader and has already begun to restructure some of our laws. He has advised me and has helped me in my infinite wisdom. We will continue our conquests until we reign supreme for Huitzilopochtli!
King Itzcoatl
